The secret to being "lightweight yet strong": What are the advantages of steel structures?

Steel structures refer to building structural systems composed of steel components, possessing advantages such as high strength, light weight, good seismic resistance, and high construction efficiency.

Characteristics of Steel Structures

1. Steel structures are lightweight yet have high load-bearing capacity: They are a lightweight, high-strength material.

2. Steel is very close to a homogeneous and isotropic material: When steel is divided into tiny pieces, each piece will have roughly the same mechanical properties, and the properties are roughly the same in all directions, which is the basis of solid mechanics.

3. Steel has good plasticity and toughness: Under static load, steel has excellent plastic deformation ability.

4. Steel has good weldability: "Good" weldability means that the steel can maintain the integrity of the welded part without cracking during and after welding.

5. Steel structures are leak-proof: Whether using welding, riveting, or bolted connections, steel structures can be made airtight and leak-proof.

6. Steel structures are factory-manufactured and assembled on-site: Components are lightweight, construction is convenient, the site footprint is small, the construction period is short, and it is easy to dismantle, reinforce, and expand.

7. Steel has poor corrosion resistance: Steel is prone to rust in environments with high humidity and corrosive media, constantly weakening the cross-section, damaging the structure, and affecting its service life. Therefore, steel structures require regular maintenance.

8. Steel structures have good heat resistance.

Appropriate Application Scope of Steel Structures

1. Heavy industrial plants: Plants with large spans and column spacing, or those equipped with heavy-duty cranes or large-tonnage cranes, or plants with 2-3 layers of cranes, as well as some high-temperature workshops, are suitable for using steel crane beams, steel roof trusses, and steel columns, or even a complete steel structure.

2. Large-span structures: The larger the span of the structure, the more significant the economic benefits of reducing the structural weight.

3. Tall structures and high-rise buildings: Tall structures include high-voltage transmission line towers, substation structures, radio and television transmission towers and masts, etc.  Using steel structures not only reduces weight and facilitates installation and construction, but also reduces wind load due to the lightweight and high strength of the steel and the smaller cross-section of the components.

4. Structures subjected to dynamic loads: Steel has good dynamic performance and toughness, making it suitable for use as crane beams in bridge cranes that directly bear heavy loads or have large spans.

5. Demountable and movable structures: Mobile exhibition halls and prefabricated houses, etc., are best constructed with steel structures. Steel structures are lightweight, easy to dismantle, and, when using bolted connections, easy to assemble and disassemble. Construction machinery must also use steel structures to reduce structural weight.

6. Containers and pipelines: Due to the high strength and good airtightness of steel, high-pressure gas pipes and pipelines, gas tanks, and boilers are all made of steel.

7. Lightweight steel structures: Lightweight steel structures composed of single angle steel or thin-walled steel sections, as well as portal steel frame structures, have the advantages of light weight, fast construction, and steel savings. They have been widely used in recent years.

8. Other buildings: Transport corridors, trestle bridges, various pipeline supports, and blast furnace and boiler frameworks are also usually constructed with steel structures.
