A complete analysis of steel sheet pile construction technology: from inspection and correction to the use of steel sheet piles

Steel sheet piles refer to steel materials used in bank protection projects, mining projects, and foundation projects of buildings. Steel sheet piles mainly include thin sheet piles, combined support piles, and tubular support piles. In construction, steel sheet piles are mostly used to retain soil.

They are used when the foundation is deep and there is no sufficient slope space. Steel sheet piles are usually driven into the soil using a pile driver. Steel sheet pile construction methods 1) Inspection and correction of steel sheet piles Steel sheet piles used for temporary support of foundation pits are inspected for surface defects, length, width, thickness, height, end squareness, straightness, and lock shape. Welded parts that affect the core driving of the piles are cut off (cut holes and cross-section defects should be reinforced). If there is severe rust, measure the actual thickness of the cross-section and reduce it.

Steel sheet pile correction methods are:

(1) Surface defect correction First clean the rust and oil stains on the surface near the defect, then fill it with welding repair method, and then grind it with a grinding wheel.

(2) Correction of the end rectangular ratio Use oxyacetylene to cut the pile end so that it is perpendicular to the axis, and then use a grinding wheel to smooth and repair the cut surface. When the amount of repair is not large, use a grinding wheel directly for repair.
(3) Correction of pile body deflection For ventral bending correction, the two ends of the steel sheet pile bending section are fixed on the support points, and the jacks installed on the gantry top beam are used to perform cold bending correction on the convex part of the steel sheet pile; for lateral bending correction, the two ends of the steel sheet pile bending section are fixed on the correction platform support on a special correction platform, and jacks are set at a certain distance on the correction platform on the side of the steel sheet pile bending section. The jacks are used to press the convex part of the steel sheet pile for cold bending correction.
(4) Correction of pile body distortion Depending on the distortion, the method in (3) can be used for correction.
(5) Correction of local deformation of the pile section Local deformation is corrected by combining jack pressing, hammer striking and oxyacetylene flame heating.
(6) Correction of lock deformation Use standard steel sheet piles as lock shaping jigs, and use slow winch pulling and adjustment or oxyacetylene flame heating and hammering jigs to push them for straightening.

Steel sheet piles are mainly used for permanent or temporary civil engineering structures, as retaining walls, retaining walls, breakwaters, etc., to maintain the stability of soil or water bodies. They can also be used in cofferdams, foundation pit support, emergency rescue and other occasions.

Uses of steel sheet piles:

Permanent building structures:

Wharfs, freight yards, embankments, revetments, breakwaters, etc.

Sluices, water pipes, foundation reinforcement, anti-collapse, water-retaining walls, etc.

Temporary building structures:

Cofferdams, used for the construction of bridges, pipelines and other projects.

Temporary revetments, river interruptions, temporary islands, foundation pit support, etc.

Mountain closures, used to protect mountains and prevent landslides. Disaster Rescue:
Temporary protection against floods, landslides, collapses, quicksand, and other disasters.

Advantages of Steel Sheet Piles:
High Strength and Rigidity: Steel sheet piles can withstand significant pressure and loads.
Watertightness: The locking design of steel sheet piles effectively prevents water leaks.
Easy Construction: Steel sheet piles are easy to drive in and out, adapting to varying geological conditions and construction environments.
Reusability: Steel sheet piles can be reused multiple times, reducing project costs.
Environmental Protection: Steel sheet pile construction reduces land damage and environmental impact.

Classifications of Steel Sheet Piles:
By shape, common types include Larsen and Lackawanna.
By material, common types include hot-rolled and cold-bent steel sheet piles.
